INEC holds meeting with military chiefs on governorship elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has held meeting with service chiefs to deliberate on security matters relating to the Saturday elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, at a meeting of the inter-agency consultative committee meeting on election security held on Thursday at the INEC headquarters, Abuja, said that the commission has effectively tackled all challenges of logistics experienced during the presidential and national assembly elections.

Yakubu affirmed that all polling units across the country will open for simultaneous accreditation and voting at 8.00am Nigerian time on Saturday.

Representative of the National Security Adviser, Sanusi Galadima, who spoke on behalf of security chiefs, assured Nigerians of adequate security before, during and after the March 9 elections.

INEC will conduct governorship election in 29 states, 991 legislative seats in the 36 states of the federation, six area councils and 62 councilors for the area councils in the Federal Capital Territory. A total of 1, 082 candidates are seeking the mandate of Nigerians in the Saturday, March 9 elections.
