JUST IN: Doyin Okupe dumps Labour Party
Former Labour Party campaign Chief Doyin Okupe has officially resigned from the party, attributing his decision to ideological differences that emerged after the 2023 elections.
In a letter to the party leadership shared with journalists, Okupe explained that while he appreciates the platform the Labour Party provided for his presidential campaign with Peter Obi, the party’s left-of-center leanings are incompatible with his lifelong commitment to right-wing and liberal democratic principles.
“It is this ideological conflict that makes me seek an exit so that I may continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity, and freedom,” Okupe wrote in the letter.
He emphasized his gratitude for the “cordiality and respect” accorded to him during his time with the party, while expressing his best wishes for their future success.
Okupe’s resignation comes after a turbulent period surrounding his involvement with the Labour Party.

In December 2023, he was convicted of money laundering charges and sentenced to two years in prison, though he opted to pay a fine instead.
Soon after, he stepped down from his campaign position while pledging ongoing support for Obi.
With his departure, Okupe signals a potential shift in the political landscape within the Labour Party as it navigates the post-election period and refines its ideological direction.
It remains to be seen how this move will impact the party’s internal dynamics and future strategies he stated .
