Minister’s purse stolen at police conference

At a high-profile conference for senior police officers on Tuesday, UK Police and Crime Minister Dame Diana Johnson had her purse stolen, highlighting an unexpected security lapse.

The theft occurred during the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) conference at a four-star hotel near Kenilworth in the Midlands, where Johnson had delivered a speech addressing the “epidemic of antisocial behaviour, theft, and shoplifting” that she claimed was inherited from the Conservative government.

Warwickshire Police swiftly arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of burglary in connection with the incident. He has since been released on bail. The Home Office confirmed the theft but assured that no security risks were identified. However, they declined to provide further comment.

This incident unfolded on the same day the UK government began early releases of prisoners to alleviate overcrowding in England and Wales’ jails.

PSA President Nick Smart, speaking at the conference, criticized the chronic under-investment in policing, which he argued has left forces financially strained and ill-equipped to handle rising crime rates.

Smart also condemned the handling of prison overcrowding, expressing concern that police officers might arrest offenders only to find no space in prisons for them.

Following the conference, Johnson acknowledged the efforts of police officers during the summer riots in a post on X but did not mention the theft. The incident underscores the challenges facing the UK’s criminal justice system, as highlighted by both Johnson and Smart in their speeches.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to address these issues if Labour wins the upcoming general election, promising to hire thousands of new officers to tackle rising crime.

According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, there were an estimated 2.7 million incidents of theft in the year ending September 2023, reflecting ongoing concerns about crime across the country.
