Murder in the Capital: Army intelligence Colonel killed in Abuja home attack

The killing of a serving Nigerian Army officer at his residence in Abuja has intensified concerns over the growing reach of violent criminal networks into the nation’s capital, raising fresh questions about the safety of security personnel and residents alike.

Colonel Abdussalam Ude, a senior officer of the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps, was shot dead on Monday evening after armed assailants attacked his home in the Kurudu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in what security sources believe may have been a failed abduction attempt.

The attack, which also left the officer’s wife, driver and security guard with gunshot wounds, has triggered investigations by security agencies seeking to determine whether the incident was a targeted assassination, a kidnapping operation gone wrong, or another manifestation of the worsening insecurity in parts of the FCT.

Attack Unfolded Shortly After Officer Returned Home

According to security sources familiar with the incident, Colonel Ude had only recently arrived at his residence after the day’s official duties when heavily armed gunmen struck.

The attackers were reportedly attempting to abduct either the senior military officer or members of his household before the situation escalated into violence.

During the confrontation, the assailants opened fire, killing Colonel Ude at the scene.

His wife, personal driver and security guard sustained gunshot injuries and were immediately evacuated to a hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

Authorities have not disclosed the extent of their injuries.

Beyond domestic operations, he also undertook international assignments in the Republic of Chad and France, contributing to intelligence-sharing and security cooperation initiatives.

Military colleagues reportedly described him as a disciplined, committed and highly professional officer whose experience made him a valuable asset to the Armed Forces.

Security Concerns in the Federal Capital

The killing has renewed concerns about the security situation in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, where incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery and violent attacks have continued despite intensified security operations.

Kurudu and several neighbouring communities have witnessed periodic security incidents in recent years, prompting repeated calls for increased surveillance, intelligence-led policing and stronger collaboration between security agencies.

The attack on a serving intelligence officer has also highlighted the evolving tactics of criminal groups, who increasingly target residential neighbourhoods regardless of the status of their victims.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not released an official statement on the incident.
