National Assembly suspends official visits to South Africa over xenophobic attacks
Nigeria’s National Assembly has suspended official visits to South Africa amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in the country.
The decision follows growing concerns among Nigerian lawmakers over reports of attacks, intimidation and harassment of Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa.
The development comes as the Senate and House of Representatives have intensified scrutiny of the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa. The Senate has condemned renewed xenophobic attacks and called for stronger measures to protect Nigerians and safeguard their interests.
The House of Representatives has also moved to investigate losses reportedly suffered by Nigerians as a result of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The suspension of official visits is expected to serve as a diplomatic and political signal of Nigeria’s displeasure with the continued mistreatment of its citizens, while putting pressure on relevant authorities to address the situation.
Nigeria and South Africa maintain important diplomatic, economic and political ties, with both countries playing influential roles in African affairs. However, relations have periodically been strained by attacks against Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.
The National Assembly’s position underscores growing calls for stronger diplomatic action to ensure the safety, rights and property of Nigerians residing in South Africa.
