National Intermediate Games postponed to first quarter of 2027

The inaugural National Intermediate Games, originally scheduled to take place in Lagos from 1 to 15 October 2026, have been postponed to the first quarter of 2027 to allow organisers more time to prepare for the event.

The postponement was formally communicated by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) to the National Sports Commission (NSC) following a review of preparations by the Local Organising Committee, the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.

The assessment followed a Joint Technical Meeting held from 3 to 6 September and examined proposed venues, sporting events, technical requirements, rules and regulations, as well as other key operational areas.

A statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the Director-General of the NSC, said the review found that the Games could technically go ahead but that the time available was insufficient to deliver the inaugural edition to the required standard.

“While the review established that the Games could technically proceed, it also determined that the remaining timeframe may not be sufficient to deliver the inaugural edition to the standard befitting Lagos and an event of national significance,” the statement said.

The NSC stated that the decision was made to protect the quality and credibility of the Games and ensure the event establishes a strong operational standard for future editions.

“The postponement is intended to safeguard the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to establish an operational benchmark for future editions,” it added.

Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the Games and will continue preparations with the NSC and other stakeholders while awaiting a new date from the Local Organising Committee.

The NSC also said activities within its immediate responsibility would continue, including accreditation, zonal elimination competitions for team sports and other technical and operational preparations.

The new date for the Games will be finalised and announced by the Local Organising Committee.

The maiden National Intermediate Games are expected to bring together about 15,000 athletes aged between 15 and 18, with Lagos selected as the host for the inaugural edition.
