NDLEA intensifies nationwide drug crackdown with major seizures, arrests

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has ramped up its efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across Nigeria, making significant arrests and seizures in a series of operations that underscore the ongoing fight against illicit drugs.

Among the most notable incidents was the arrest of Ibeanusi Solomon Nosike, a businessman from Onitsha, who excreted 68 wraps of cocaine after 12 days under observation following his interception at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

This marks the latest in a string of arrests targeting drug couriers, particularly those bound for Vietnam, a known destination for traffickers.

The agency also apprehended another Vietnam-bound businessman, Paul Okwuy Mbadugha, at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Mbadugha was found with 88 wraps of cocaine, further highlighting the persistent threat posed by international drug syndicates.

Additionally, NDLEA operatives in Lagos intercepted a massive shipment of 1,596 cartons of codeine-based syrup worth over N2.2 billion at the Tincan seaport, a haul that signals the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking operations within Nigeria.

The crackdown extended beyond major cities and airports. In Edo State, two women were arrested for selling drug-laced cookies and cakes online, while in Lagos, another suspect was found with thousands of bottles of codeine syrup and pills in the Mushin area.

The NDLEA also dismantled a five-member female drug trafficking gang at the Seme border and seized nearly 7 kg of “Loud,” a potent strain of cannabis, from the syndicate.

These actions are part of a broader, nationwide operation that includes community outreach under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.

The NDLEA has been conducting sensitization activities in schools, workplaces, and communities across Nigeria to educate citizens on the dangers of drug abuse.
