Professor Kamene Okonjo, mother of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State, Obi (Dr) Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II, has died at the age of 96.
The renowned sociologist and women’s rights advocate died on Friday, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence, service to humanity and advocacy for women’s empowerment.
She was the matriarch of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku and the wife of the late Obi (Professor) Chukwuka Okonjo, the immediate past traditional ruler of the kingdom. The couple were married for 66 years.
Her death was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, Palace Secretary of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, on behalf of the royal family.
The statement described the late professor as an extraordinary woman whose life was defined by intellectual brilliance, humility, compassion, dignity and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of humanity.
According to the royal family, Professor Okonjo established herself as an internationally recognised sociologist through her outstanding academic achievements, intellectual contributions and lifelong commitment to the promotion of women’s rights and empowerment.
Despite her academic accomplishments and international recognition, she remained humble, gentle and gracious, earning the admiration and affection of those who knew her, the statement said.
The palace noted that her contributions transcended Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and Nigeria, earning her widespread respect within international academic and intellectual circles.
Beyond her scholarly achievements, the royal family said her life reflected strong family values, compassion and dedication to the service of humanity.
The family called on the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom to celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased, describing her as a remarkable daughter, mother, scholar and matriarch whose contributions to society would not be forgotten.
Professor Okonjo’s death marks the end of a life devoted to scholarship, family and the advancement of women, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond her immediate family and community.
