Nigerian undergrads die taking selfie
Olabiyi Emmanuel and Olokun Babatunde Alex drowned Saturday in a lake at the Federal University of Technology, Akure,
According to an official statement, their canoe keeled over as four students huddled in the canoe were trying to take selfies after an entrepreneurship training at the varsity’s laboratory for fishery and aquaculture.
Two of them were able to swim put of the lake while the others waddled and died before the state’s fire service arrived.
Both of the dead were 300-level students of project management and agricultural and environmental engineering.
The school’s student union has issued a statement.
In the statement, Public Relations Officer of the FUTA Students Union Fowowe Ayomide said the students drowned at the place behind the Great Hall, Obakekere.
A week ago, Olaniran Samsudeen, a 200-level student of the University of Ilorin drowned at a swimming pool in a popular hotel in Ilorin in another incident of a selfie that went awry.
A 300-level pharmacy student lost his life too whole taking a selfie by a pool.
The drive to get social with selfies has een taking on a deadly twist as phone technology advances with high definition cameras suitable for Facebook and Twitter and Instagram posts.
