Nigerian’s escape from suspected organ-trafficking ring highlights dangers of fake overseas job offers

A Nigerian man who narrowly escaped what he described as an international organ-trafficking syndicate has shed light on the growing dangers of fraudulent overseas job offers, as anti-trafficking agencies continue to warn job seekers against falling victim to transnational criminal networks.

The 28-year-old, identified only as Chidi to protect his identity, said he accepted what appeared to be a legitimate administrative job in the Middle East after being introduced to a recruitment agent through a trusted acquaintance. The offer included a tax-free salary, free flight tickets and visa processing, making it appear credible.

However, according to his account, events took a troubling turn shortly after he left Nigeria.

Chidi said he was routed through another country on a tourist visa rather than the promised work permit. Upon arrival, he alleged that his passport and mobile phone were confiscated under the pretext of completing administrative formalities.

He further claimed that he and other recruits were taken to a guarded residential facility where they were subjected to blood tests, scans and other medical examinations without being given any explanation for the procedures.

According to Chidi, he became suspicious after overhearing conversations about medical compatibility among those overseeing the facility. He said he was eventually able to contact a relative using a concealed mobile phone, leading to a rescue operation involving local authorities.
