Police officer bags death sentence for killing phone repairer over N100 bribe
A High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State has sentenced a police Inspector, Ubi Ebri to death for murder.
The police inspector was accused of killing one Mr Ibeh Onyeka, a phone dealer, at a checkpoint in Asaba, on April 5, 2023.
He reportedly shot and killed the deceased for refusing to give him a bribe of N100.
The Prosecution led by E.H Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, alleged that the defendant, was part of the Police Patrol team that mounted the stop and search exercise.
The deceased and his wife were said to be driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were flagged down by the police team for search.
The defendant was said to have opened fire on the vehicle leaving the deceased dead after he was hit on the head by bullets.
The wife of the deceased who sat in the front seat with him was however, unhurt.
The Court, presided over by Justice C. D Diai convicted and sentenced the defendant to death on Tuesday, June 12, 2024.
