Post-World Cup Shake-Up: Managerial changes, record transfers dominate football headlines
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded, attention has shifted to a busy off-season marked by major managerial appointments, high-profile player transfers and preparations for the 2026/27 club campaign.
Spain emerged as world champions after defeating Argentina in the World Cup final, while Manchester City midfielder Rodri was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner for his outstanding performances throughout the competition.
One of the tournament’s surprise stories came from Cape Verde, where defender Sidny Lopes Cabral won the fan vote for Goal of the Tournament following his spectacular long-range strike against Argentina during the group stage. France captain Kylian Mbappé also addressed supporters after Les Bleus finished fourth, promising the national team would return stronger.
Away from the pitch, several national teams have announced significant coaching changes following the World Cup.
The French Football Federation confirmed the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as the new head coach of the French national team, replacing Didier Deschamps after his 14-year tenure. Speaking during his unveiling, Zidane described managing France as “the only job” he wanted and pledged to build the team’s next successful era.
Germany also ushered in a new chapter by appointing former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as head coach, while Belgium named former Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel as its new manager.
At club level, Real Madrid welcomed José Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabéu for a second spell as head coach, with the Portuguese tactician expected to oversee a major rebuilding project ahead of the new season.
The summer transfer window has also gathered pace, with several European giants making significant additions to their squads.
Real Madrid strengthened its defence by signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool and Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. The Spanish club also secured the services of Bernardo Silva as it seeks to bounce back from a trophyless 2025/26 campaign.
In the Premier League, Chelsea completed a reported £117 million move for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, while Manchester City responded by signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson in a deal reportedly worth £116 million.
Barcelona also reinforced its attack with the acquisition of winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for a reported €70 million.
With pre-season tours already underway across Asia and the Americas, clubs are now focused on integrating their new signings before Europe’s major domestic leagues begin in mid-August, setting the stage for another highly anticipated football season.
