USPF commissions Emerging Technologies Centre at OGITECH to drive digital innovation

In a major step towards bridging the digital divide and fostering technological advancement, the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has handed over a state-of-the-art Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Ogun State.

The cutting-edge ICT project, located within the institution’s premises, is designed to enhance students’ learning experiences while serving as a hub for digital innovation, research, and development (R&D).

This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader objective of leveraging digital transformation for economic growth.

The handover ceremony, held on Thursday, featured the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the effective utilization and long-term sustainability of the ETC within the institution.

As part of USPF’s national initiative to promote digital inclusion, the ETC is equipped with: 100 desktop computers; Emerging technology applications and Broadband connectivity tools.

These facilities are expected to provide students and faculty members with access to cutting-edge technological resources, fostering skills development in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and cybersecurity.

Speaking at the ceremony, USPF Secretary, Yomi Arowosafe, described the Centre as “more than just bricks and mortar”, but a strategic investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria.

“Under the guidance of the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, the USPF is mandated to provide ICT access to unserved and underserved communities across Nigeria,” he stated.

He highlighted that USPF has successfully implemented numerous access and connectivity projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, significantly improving ICT adoption and deepening digital penetration.

“With a student population of 9,300, OGITECH stands as one of Nigeria’s leading technology institutions. Partnering with them to bring this project to life ensures that students and faculty can leverage emerging technologies to drive innovation, research, and entrepreneurship,” Arowosafe noted.

“We believe this project will contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth. By equipping students with digital skills and fostering innovation, we are preparing the next generation of technology-driven entrepreneurs and professionals,” Arowosafe added.

In his remarks, the Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, expressed deep appreciation to the NCC and USPF for selecting the institution as a beneficiary of this milestone project. He assured that OGITECH would fully utilize the facility to benefit both the institution and the broader community.
