What next for Aregbesola, Lai Mohammed others as Adamu backs serving governors as party leaders?

At ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the ruling All Progressive Congress APC, the national chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has thrown his weight behind serving Governors as leaders of the party at the state level. Adamu said the constitution of the party does not make provision for dual leadership in the states.

His comments is coming on the heels of leadership crisis rocking the party at many of their state chapters.

Recall that parallel congresses were conducted by various factions to elect new leaders of the party in many states.

In Kwara State, the Governor of the state, Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq is at cross roads with the Minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed over who control the party structures in the state. Same leadership crisis also exist in Osun State where Governor Ggboyega Oyetola is on a war path with his predecessor and now Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.

Despite the efforts of Adamu, who was previously appointed to head a reconciliation committee to resolve the crisis at many state chapters of the party, there are still ongoing battles at many state chapters of the party as the warring parties have refused to shift their grounds. Some of the factions of the party at the state level have approached the Court to resolve the leadership crisis in their states.

However, Adamu’s comments during the NEC meeting today shows the national leadership of the party is fully behind the state Governors.

What next for Aregbesola, Lai Mohammed and other leaders of the party who have refused to acknowledge serving Governors as the leaders of the party in the state?

Some have begun to perfect plans to defect to other parties while others have pending cases in court. Recall that there are reports former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari is planning to dump the ruling party for the PDP. More factional leaders of the party may follow suit as we continue to approach the general elections. However, since the party’s constitution is clear on the issue, these factional leaders should reconsider their stance and work for the interest of the party.
