Why I rejected €200m Saudi Arabia offer to stay at Manchester United-- Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up on his decision to reject a lucrative €200 million offer from Saudi Arabia last summer, insisting that money has never been his primary motivation.

The Portuguese midfielder disclosed that despite intense speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford, he chose to remain with Manchester United because he wanted to continue pursuing his dreams and set the right example for his children.

Fernandes, 31, made the revelation during an appearance on the popular podcast, The Diary of a CEO, where he reflected on the values that guide his career decisions.

According to the midfielder, turning down the massive Saudi offer was about prioritising purpose, ambition, and family values over financial gain.

“Instead of becoming the richest person from my town ever, I want to live my dreams. And I want to pass these values on to my children,” Fernandes said during the interview.

The United skipper also paid tribute to his wife for supporting him throughout his football journey long before fame and financial success came his way.

“Look, my wife, she chose to live my dream with me when I was still 17. I have been with her since age 16,” he added.

Fernandes’ comments come after months of speculation linking him with a possible move to the Saudi Pro League, where several top European stars have relocated in recent years following huge financial offers.

Despite the reported interest and the enormous contract proposal, the former Sporting CP playmaker opted to remain at Manchester United, where he continues to play a central leadership role for the Premier League giants.

Since joining United from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, contributing goals, assists, and leadership during challenging periods for the team.

His decision to reject the Saudi move is likely to further strengthen his standing among Manchester United supporters, many of whom regard him as one of the club’s most committed and passionate players in recent years.
