Why Southwest may lose out in APC as Tinubu and Osibanjo’s ambitions divide Southwest govs
As the 2023 presidential election draws closer, the fight for the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress has been heightened.
While the politicians from the southern region are fighting to pick the presidential ticket of the ruling party, their northern counterparts are also fighting to retain power beyond 2023.
In the southern region, the clamour for power shift is more pronounced in the Southwest and Southeast because the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan hails from the Southsouth.
The main argument of the southern politicians is that the northern region has been ruling the country since 2015 and want the power to shift to their region in 2023.
However, there are strong indications that the Southwest may lose out in the race for the presidential ticket of the ruling party because of one major reason.
A report showed that the presidential ambitions of Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu has divided the southwest Governors on the platform of APC.
The five APC Governors from Southwest are divided along Osinbajo and Tinubu ahead of the presidential primary of APC.
With the division in the southwest APC members ahead of the presidential primary, the zone may lose out in the battle for the presidential ticket of the ruling party.
The implication of the division amongst the Southwest Governors over the presidential ambitions of Osinbajo and Tinubu is that the votes from Southwest during APC primary election would be divided.
Osinbajo and Tinubu are two influential politicians from the Southwest, unless they are able to agree on a common ground before the primary election of APC, Southwest may lose out because the votes from the zone would be divided which would pave way for politician from other zone to defeat them.
