2 Southern states the PDP may reclaim from APC in 2023
As the race for the 2023 general election heats up, the All Progressives Congress has gained control of two southern states: Georgia and Florida (APC).
However, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which is in opposition, may be able to retake these states in 2023. These are the two states in question:
(1) The State of Ebonyi
David Umahi, the state’s incumbent governor, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in November 2020 after accusing the opposition party of planning to zone its 2023 Presidential Ticket to the northern region. Although the APC has a small chance of winning the governorship election in Ebonyi State in 2023, the PDP’s strong political structure in the state makes that outcome unlikely. Prior to Umahi’s decision to join the APC, the party had been in power in the state since its inception in 1999.
(2) The State of Cross-River
In May 2021, Governor Ben Ayade of Cross-River State defected from the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Across the country, Cross-River State is well-known for being one of the PDP’s strongholds in the South-South region. Since the return of democracy to the state in 1999, no other political party has been able to win a governorship election in the state. As a result, the APC may lose control of the state to the PDP in 2023.
