A 24-year-old man, Sodiq Afefelaye, was on Tuesday arraigned at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.
In a two-count charge preferred against him the accused, was said to have had unlawful carnal knowledge and sexually assaulted the victim.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Ajaga Agboko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Freeman Street, Lagos Island between 10 and 10.30 a.m on September 17, 2016 while everyone was away.

While explaining that Rape contravenes provisions of Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011, Agboko said the defendant sexually assaulted and molested the victim, inflicting her with injuries.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Ogunbowale, ordered the defendant to apply for bail at the High Court, explaining that the magistrate’s court did not have the jurisdiction to grant him bail.
The case was adjourned to November 2 while the court is awaiting legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution.
