Alligator pepper is a popular spice made from the seeds and seed pods of Aframomum danielli which is native to the West African region.
Known botanically as Aframomum melegueta, the plants of the alligator pepper is a member of the ginger family Zingiberaceae.
Alligator pepper is also commonly known as hepper pepper, mbongo spice, Afrika kakulesi, melegueta pepper, ginny papper, Guinea pepper or atare in Yorubaland.
