In Nigeria, history tends to be forgotten, however, the past could tell us more about what is likely to happen in the future. Bola Ahmed Tinubu and retired General Olusegun Obasanjo are people whose relationship and political career has procured attention in the Nigerian history books.

Tinubu has been the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for well over a decade, and he was also the governor of Lagos state from 1999-2007. General Olusegun Obasanjo on the other hand, is an elder statesman who is not actively involved in politics but is among individuals, who guide the upcoming generation of leaders and point out mistakes of political officeholders.

Obasanjo and Tinubu were political officeholders during the same period (1999-2007), however, while Obasanjo was the democrat president at that time, Tinubu was the governor of Lagos state. The two political giants had some clashes during their time in power over the creation of more LGA in Lagos and this led to the president (Obasanjo) withholding the monthly allocation of Lagos state for 17 months.

Tinubu was also known for criticizing the administration of Obasanjo and this may have deepened the bad blood between them. Fortunately, the issue in the past was laid to rest when Obasanjo and Tinubu collectively worked towards the actualization of Buhari as president during the 2015 election. After Buhari’s first year in office, Obasanjo pushed against the re-election of Buhari, opposing the will of the APC national chairman. Even with the opposition from the former president, Buhari succeeded in entering for a second time.

Tinubu who had been engaging in politics from the sidelines unexpectedly made his intentions to run for Presidency known when he visited Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja. Obasanjo might not be comfortable with Tinubu becoming the next president because of the history they share. Although the tension between them has reduced compared to their rift in the early 2000s, we are not to expect support from Obasanjo during the political campaign of Tinubu.

Do you believe Tinubu is fit to be the next Nigerian president, whatever your answer give the reasons in the comments section?
