IGP orders detention of police officers, as Harrison Gwamnishu exposes their extortion activities
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the detention of four police officers accused of extorting ₦10 million from a youth corps member in Bayelsa State.
The officers, identified as ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine, are affiliated with the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa.
The IGP’s directive follows public outcry and an investigation into the alleged extortion incident. The situation was highlighted by Harrison Gwamnishu, the Director General of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation and a prominent human rights activist. Gwamnishu has long advocated for justice in cases of police misconduct, and his efforts were crucial in bringing this incident to light. Following his investigation, he reached out to the relevant authorities, demanding prompt action against the involved officers. His advocacy significantly contributed to the IGP’s swift response.
In a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the police confirmed that the extorted money has been recovered, and the officers are currently undergoing an orderly room trial.
The IGP reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and misconduct within the police force. He assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against the officers involved.
