NFF denies calling for Infantino’s resignation

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports claiming it has joined calls for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign from his position as head of world football’s governing body.

The NFF, in a statement posted on its official X account on Saturday, described the reports as “outright falsehood” and urged the public to disregard them.

The clarification followed reports on social media suggesting that the Nigerian football body had aligned with some European football associations demanding Infantino’s removal.

Infantino has faced growing criticism from some football stakeholders following his controversial FIFA Forward enterprise proposal, which sought to attract external investment into FIFA competitions to boost funding.

Although the proposal was subsequently withdrawn, football associations from countries including Wales, England and Norway have reportedly called on Infantino to step aside.

Argentina and Mexico, however, have publicly expressed support for the FIFA president.

Rejecting claims that Nigeria had joined the opposition, the NFF stated: “Contrary to reports, especially on social media, @thenff has never asked and is not asking for @FIFAcom President, Mr. Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA PRESIDENT.

The NFF has previously expressed support for Infantino’s leadership. In February, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised the FIFA chief’s “decade of transformative leadership.”

The Nigerian federation also submitted a letter of nomination and support for Infantino’s bid for re-election as FIFA president in 2027.
