Upson backs Chelsea to finish second in Premier League

Former Arsenal defender Matt Upson has backed Chelsea to finish second in the Premier League despite their 2-1 defeat to the champions on Sunday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live after the London derby, Upson said Chelsea have a strong chance of securing a runners-up finish, citing the quality of their squad, the influence of manager and their limited domestic schedule.

Chelsea made a flying start at the Emirates Stadium, taking the lead just 90 seconds into the match after Morgan Rogers found space outside the box and fired a low shot past the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Arsenal, however, responded strongly and turned the game around through goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard to claim all three points.

Despite the defeat, Upson was impressed by Chelsea’s performance and believes they have the ingredients to mount a strong challenge for second place.

“Chelsea to finish second for me,” Upson said.

“They have a great opportunity, and they have a manager who can get them going.

“They have some senior players mixed in and they only have domestic football, which is an advantage. Based off that performance, I feel like that.”

Upson’s prediction comes despite Chelsea suffering defeat against the reigning champions, with the former defender suggesting their squad depth, experienced players and lighter fixture schedule could work in their favour as the season progresses.
