Chelsea enjoys midweek break as Alonso targets third straight win against Tottenham
By Ihuoma Inyama
Chelsea have been handed a potential advantage ahead of their Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Xabi Alonso hoping to guide the Blues to a third consecutive victory.
While several of their domestic rivals contend with European commitments this week, Chelsea have a full midweek available for recovery and preparations ahead of Saturday’s London derby.
The additional time could prove valuable for Alonso’s side, who strengthened their momentum with an impressive victory over Everton last weekend.
Tottenham, meanwhile, face European action before the weekend encounter, potentially leaving Chelsea with more time to recover, refine their tactics and prepare for the challenge.
The break also gives Alonso an opportunity to work more closely with his players on the training ground as he continues to establish his tactical approach at Stamford Bridge.
With fewer fixtures to navigate, the Chelsea manager could benefit from greater continuity in team selection, allowing his regular starters to build understanding and improve coordination across the pitch.
Chelsea will hope to turn that advantage into consistent performances as they seek to close the gap on their Premier League rivals and strengthen their position in the standings.

One of the most encouraging developments in the Everton victory was the improvement in Chelsea’s defensive organisation.
The Blues produced a disciplined performance at the back, with their central defenders benefiting from better protection from midfield. The result also ended their prolonged wait for a clean sheet, offering a confidence boost ahead of the Tottenham encounter.
Defensive solidity has been an important area of focus for Alonso, who has been working to improve the team’s shape and coordination without the ball.
The performance against Everton suggested that those efforts could be beginning to pay off, although the Tottenham test is expected to provide a tougher examination of Chelsea’s progress.
The London derby will demand concentration, discipline and efficiency, particularly against a Tottenham side capable of exploiting defensive lapses.
For Alonso, the immediate objective is to ensure that Chelsea maintain the intensity and organisation they displayed last weekend while taking advantage of their additional preparation time.
A third consecutive win would provide further encouragement for the manager and his squad, reinforcing the belief that the team is making progress under his leadership.
Chelsea’s relatively lighter schedule could offer an opportunity to build momentum, but the Blues must still deliver on the pitch.
With local pride, valuable Premier League points and a winning run at stake, Saturday’s meeting with Tottenham represents another significant test of Chelsea’s development under Alonso
