In what is being hailed as one of the most significant victories in the fight against illegal drug trafficking, the Western Marine Customs Command has made a record-breaking seizure of 1,958 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, valued at an astounding ₦398.2 million. The seizure, which occurred on February 19, 2025, represents a major blow to the illicit drug trade along Nigeria’s coastline and further underscores the relentless commitment of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to combat narcotic smuggling.

The operation, led by the Western Marine Customs team, targeted a notorious smuggling route used by traffickers to import large quantities of illicit substances into the country. Acting on credible intelligence, the Customs officers intercepted a vessel off the coast of Lagos, which was attempting to offload the shipment of cannabis. After a high-seas pursuit, the vessel was successfully boarded, and the contraband was seized, preventing it from reaching the Nigerian market.

The Western Marine Command’s resolve to keep re-strategizing its operational modalities especially in the area of anti-smuggling activities has continued to pay off. The result of the intensified efforts by the ever focused and eagle-eyed officers of the Command on Thursday 20 February, 2025 at about 2300 hours (11pm) inside the sea has led to the highest single operational seizure of cannabis sativa under the exceptional leadership,
