Data that shows why a Northerner should emerge as PDP presidential candidate for 2023 election
The 2023 general election is fast approaching, and politicians have started revealing their ambitions.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently in a crisis due to zoning arrangements in the opposition party. Many supporters of the party, especially from the South, want the party’s presidential ticket to be zoned for their region.
They argue that it would be unfair for the opposition party to give its presidential ticket to a northerner after Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
In contrast, most northerners in the opposition party want the presidential ticket to be thrown open to everyone, irrespective of geopolitical zone.
The party set up a zoning committee, and the committee recommended that the ticket be open to everyone.
The party’s presidential primary election will be held on May 29, 2022, amid the zoning crisis.
However, there is data that shows that the northern part of the country deserves the PDP presidential ticket.
Since the return of democracy in 1999, the North has only ruled for 3 years on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Olusegun Obasanjo, from the South-west geopolitical zone, emerged as president in 1999 and served for eight years.
Obasanjo handed over to Umar Musa Yaradua, who came from the North-west geopolitical zone. Unfortunately, Yaradua died after three years in office and his vice, Goodluck Jonathan, was sworn in and completed his tenure.
Jonathan was reelected as president in 2011 and he served for another four years before he was ousted by Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In conclusion, the North used just three years in 16 years of PDP rule. For fairness and equity, the PDP presidential ticket should go to the north.
Those calling for the ticket to go to the south are only echoing what prevails in the APC. Because Buhari is from the north, it is natural for the ruling party to zone its presidential ticket to the south.
What’s your opinion on this? Do you agree that the PDP presidential ticket should go to the North?
