Debit or Credit card? What Nigerians should know before making payments
Understanding how a card payment affects personal finances can help consumers make more informed decisions, particularly when managing everyday expenses, travel costs and larger purchases.
The key difference between a debit card and a credit card is where the money comes from.
A debit card draws directly from funds available in a linked bank account, meaning the customer spends money already held in the account. A credit card, on the other hand, provides access to an approved credit facility that must be repaid according to agreed terms.
Debit cards can therefore be useful for routine expenses such as groceries, fuel, utility bills, subscriptions and meals. Since payments are deducted from the linked account, spending is directly connected to the customer’s available balance.
Fidelity Bank offers debit card options, including Naira and Dollar cards, allowing customers to select according to their transaction needs and currency requirements.
Credit cards provide greater flexibility when the timing of an expense does not coincide with the availability of cash. For instance, a traveller who needs to pay for a flight or hotel before receiving an expected income could use an approved credit facility, provided there is a realistic repayment plan.
However, having an available credit limit does not necessarily mean a customer can comfortably afford to spend the full amount.
Before using a credit card, customers should consider the applicable interest rate, fees, repayment date and minimum payment requirements. Paying only the minimum can leave an outstanding balance that continues to attract interest under the card’s terms.
For travellers, other factors such as international acceptance, transaction currency, fees, repayment capacity and additional benefits may also influence the choice between debit and credit cards.
Fidelity Bank’s premium offerings include the Visa Signature Debit Card and Visa Infinite Credit Card. While the Visa Signature Debit Card uses available funds in the customer’s account, the Visa Infinite Credit Card provides access to an approved credit facility.
The bank says benefits attached to its Visa Infinite Credit Card include complimentary LoungeKey access to more than 850 lounges for the cardholder and one guest per visit, concierge services, benefits at more than 900 hotels, multi-trip travel insurance and discounted personal fast-track services at more than 380 international airports.
The usefulness of such benefits, however, depends on how frequently customers travel and use the services, as well as applicable eligibility requirements and terms.
Financial discipline remains important regardless of the card being used. Customers should monitor transactions, understand charges and assess whether an expense fits within their financial plans.
Ultimately, neither a debit card nor a credit card is automatically the right choice for every transaction.
A debit card may suit customers who prefer to spend from existing funds, while a credit card can provide flexibility for planned expenses where repayment is clearly manageable.
Customers can request eligible Fidelity Bank debit cards through the Fidelity Mobile App, while those interested in credit cards and premium offerings can contact a branch or relationship manager to discuss eligibility, fees, limits, repayment terms and benefits.
The fundamental consideration, therefore, is not simply which card is being used, but whether the payment fits into a sustainable spending or repayment plan.
