Dispatch rider crushed to death by articulated truck in Ilupeju

A commercial dispatch rider was killed in a fatal road accident involving an articulated truck along the busy Ilupeju Bypass in Lagos on Wednesday, raising fresh concerns over road safety and the dangers faced by motorcycle operators navigating congested city highways.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the rider died instantly after colliding with a container-laden articulated truck while attempting to maneuver through heavy traffic along the bypass corridor.

Preliminary reports indicated that the dispatch rider was trying to overtake the truck within a narrowing traffic lane when he lost control and crashed into the moving vehicle.

“The dispatch rider was crushed to death on the spot after losing control during a reckless struggle for right of way with the articulated truck along the bypass corridor,” LASTMA officials said in an operational update following the incident.

Witnesses at the scene said the rider had been filtering through traffic before attempting an aggressive pass around the truck moments before the collision occurred.

The impact caused severe injuries that left the rider dead at the scene before emergency responders arrived.

Officials from LASTMA quickly moved to secure the area and prevent a breakdown of law and order, as crowds gathered around the accident site.

Traffic officers cordoned off the affected section of the bypass and secured the truck driver from angry onlookers before handing him over to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, evacuated the remains of the deceased rider to a government morgue.

The damaged motorcycle and the articulated truck were later removed from the roadway using a heavy-duty towing vehicle, allowing traffic flow to gradually resume along the congested corridor.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal crashes involving dispatch riders and heavy-duty vehicles across Lagos.

Authorities noted that similar accidents in recent weeks claimed the lives of other commercial riders in areas including Alapere and the Otedola Bridge axis.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased rider and warned commercial motorcyclists against attempting to compete for road space with articulated trucks and tankers.

“Every road user bears a fundamental responsibility to act prudently and safeguard human life,” Bakare-Oki said. “We urge dispatch riders to avoid dangerous overtaking and reckless competition with heavy-duty vehicles.”

Police authorities confirmed that the truck driver remains in custody while investigations into the fatal collision continue.

The identity of the deceased rider has not yet been released pending notification of his family and employer.
