Driver arraigned for stealing N580,000 goods in Lagos

A driver, identified as Michael Wilson, was on Thursday dragged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 59 bundles of empty cartons valued at N580,000 belonging to his employer.
The 30-old truck driver, who resides at Agege area of Lagos was charged for stealing the goods
National Daily gathered that the accused was said to have absconded with a trailer loaded with empty cartons valued at N580,000 belonging to Wahum company before he was later arrested.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on the 8th October, 2016, at Wahum Company on Wemco Road, Ogba, Ikeja.
Before he diverted the goods, it was meant to be delivered to a customer in Kaduna but sold it off to another person.
Akem explained to the court, “He sold the cartons and converted the money to his personal use.”
The accused is being tried in accordance with relevant section of the law which ran contrary to Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 which carries a penalty of seven years imprisonment.
Though he pleaded not guilty, the presiding Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum. However, the two sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government, he said.
The case has been adjourned to Jan. 23 for trial.
