Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a man, identified as Moferewa Maiye, for allegedly impersonating a DSS officer and using the disguise to intimidate and extort motorists in Abuja.

Maiye, who reportedly claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was arrested late Wednesday night at a hideout near NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II.

The arrest followed intelligence received by the DSS indicating that the suspect was allegedly using a DSS tactical uniform and a replica firearm to harass motorists and extort members of the public along the busy Abuja corridor.

At the time of his arrest, operatives reportedly recovered a DSS tactical uniform and a fake pistol from him.

The items allegedly enabled the suspect to present himself as a security operative while carrying out the alleged extortion activities.

During preliminary questioning, Maiye reportedly admitted wearing the tactical gear but claimed that the uniform and other equipment belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye, whom he described as a former DSS officer.

He reportedly told investigators that his brother died several years ago.

The DSS is said to be investigating the claim and working to establish how the suspect obtained the official-looking uniform and tactical equipment.

Investigators are also examining how long he may have operated in the Federal Capital Territory and whether other individuals were involved in the alleged activities.

The arrest comes amid heightened efforts by security agencies to clamp down on individuals who impersonate law enforcement officers to commit crimes.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that the use of security uniforms, identification documents and other official equipment by unauthorised persons can facilitate criminal activities and undermine public confidence in legitimate security operations.

Maiye remains in DSS custody while investigations continue, with authorities expected to determine the appropriate charges after the conclusion of the investigation.
