The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion, urging Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet.
He highlighted compassion, humility and service to others as qualities that Nigerians should embrace, particularly at a time when the country faces various challenges.

“Every Eid-ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, unity and stability across the country.
He stressed that maintaining national cohesion was a collective responsibility that transcended religious and other differences.
Tunji-Ojo further appealed to citizens to celebrate the occasion peacefully, with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.
