FG declares June 12 public holiday, reaffirms commitment to democratic governance

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration, reaffirming its commitment to the principles of democratic governance and national development.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, who noted that June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a symbol of the sacrifices made by citizens in the struggle for democratic rule.

According to the statement, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s political evolution and honour the courage, resilience and determination of individuals and groups who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance.

The government described June 12 as a defining moment in the country’s history, stressing that the contributions of pro-democracy activists and ordinary citizens continue to shape the nation’s democratic institutions and governance culture.

“The significance of June 12 lies in the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose collective efforts made democratic governance possible in the country,” the statement said.

It added that the legacy of the nation’s democratic heroes remains a guiding force in the pursuit of national unity, good governance and sustainable development.

The Minister of Interior reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting and strengthening democratic values across the country.

He emphasized that the administration remains focused on upholding the rule of law, promoting transparency and accountability in public service, and ensuring inclusive governance that reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo noted that democracy remains the foundation for national progress and urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at deepening democratic institutions and fostering peaceful coexistence.

The government also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on their civic responsibilities and contribute positively to the country’s democratic development.

June 12 is celebrated annually as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in recognition of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the nation’s history.

The election, believed to have been won by late business mogul and politician Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, was annulled by the military government, triggering nationwide protests and a prolonged struggle for democratic rule.

In 2018, the Federal Government officially moved Democracy Day celebrations from May 29 to June 12 in honour of the election and the sacrifices of those who championed the cause of democracy.

Since then, the day has served as a national reminder of the importance of democratic governance, civil liberties and citizen participation in nation-building.

With the declaration of the public holiday, government offices, financial institutions and many private establishments are expected to close operations on Friday to allow Nigerians participate in activities marking the occasion.

The celebration is expected to feature presidential addresses, commemorative events, civic engagements and reflections on Nigeria’s democratic progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

As the nation marks another Democracy Day, the Federal Government urged citizens to remain committed to the ideals of unity, peace, patriotism and democratic participation, describing these values as essential for building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
