FG earmarks N1.8bn to support Chibok Girls’ education
The Federal Government has approved N1.8 billion to support the education and rehabilitation of the rescued Chibok schoolgirls, marking a renewed commitment to their welfare and future development?
Announcing the allocation in Abuja, a senior official from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development stated that the funds will be used for tuition, vocational training, psychological support, and reintegration programs.
“This is part of our continuous efforts to ensure that the rescued girls receive quality education and the necessary psychosocial care to reintegrate successfully into society,” the official said.
The Chibok girls, who were abducted by Boko Haram in 2014, have been gradually rescued over the years through military operations and negotiated releases. Many of them continue to face challenges adapting to normal life due to the trauma of their captivity.
As part of the initiative, some of the rescued girls have already been enrolled at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), founded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, where they are receiving formal education alongside mentorship and counseling.
“We commend the private sector and educational institutions like AUN that have partnered with the government to provide these girls with a brighter future, the statement added.
Civil society organizations have welcomed the move but called for proper monitoring to ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the funds.
“Allocating N1.8 billion is a significant step, but the focus must be on results—real education, real skills, and real empowerment for these girls, said Mrs. Lydia James, a women’s rights advocate.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to rehabilitate victims of insurgency and promote inclusive education across the country, particularly in conflict-affected regions of the North-East.
