Fire outbreak at Imo Airport

There was fire outbreak at a section of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, on Monday afternoon; the raging inferno made passengers flee for safety.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained at the time of this report but a source said that the fire burst out at the arrival section where the airport authority is currently carrying out renovation works.

It was gathered that the fire which started at about 2.00pm went on for about 45 minutes before the Imo State Fire Service intervened and ensure the fire was extinguished to restore normalcy at the airport.

The source had narrated: “It happened at the arrival department of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.

“It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.

“It started around 2:10pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure, but the rescue work assisted in savaging the situation.”
