FOMWAN urges Tinubu to tackle rising food Prices, insecurity

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to address the escalating food prices and growing insecurity across the nation.

The appeal was made in a communique following FOMWAN’s 39th Annual National Conference in Akure, Ondo State, signed by National President Hajiya Ra’afiah Sanni and Public Relations Officer Hajiya Maimuna Momodu.

FOMWAN expressed deep concern over the high cost of food, goods, and services, emphasizing that women bear a significant burden from these challenges.

“The Conference is worried about the high cost of food, goods, and services in the country and is concerned that women carry the bulk of the problems,” the communique noted.

The organization also raised alarm over the rising insecurity in the country, attributing these issues to a deviation from divine guidance. “These challenges are as a result of our deviation from Allah’s injunction that when a community engages in corruption, Allah has promised that it would be visited with famine and insecurity,” FOMWAN stated.

To address these pressing concerns, FOMWAN recommended several measures, including the promotion of both Islamic and Western education, skill acquisition programs to enhance women’s employment prospects, and self-sustaining activities to bolster family economic security.

The communique urged women to engage in political education and participation to improve access to development, funding, and other resources necessary for family well-being. FOMWAN also advocated for collaboration with government and NGOs to increase agricultural and employment opportunities for women and girls, and to establish safe spaces for them.

In conclusion, FOMWAN stressed the importance of creating a safer environment for women and called for stricter enforcement of laws against criminal activities to address the root causes of insecurity.
