A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, has berated President Bola Tinubu over what she considered as two years disaster of the Tinubu administration.
Bucknor-Akerele, in a media interaction with VANGUARD, expressed that “the last two years have been a disaster” [since President Tinubu assumed office].She decried that the eight years before were also a disaster, lamenting that the Tinubu administration has just come to build on that disaster, [left behind by former President Muhammadu Buhari, both of the All Progressives Congress (APC)].
The former deputy governor chided the Tinubu administration over increasing hardship, hunger and starvation in the country, saying that people cannot eat. She maintained that Nigerians have emaciated; decrying that “People have lost weight because they are not eating properly.”
Bucknor-Akerele, in the media interaction, was of the view that the APC government under the leadership of President Tinubu is not what Nigerians actually need.
According to her, “So, I do not believe that this is the kind of government that we actually need.”
The former Lagos Deputy Governor had asserted: “Well, personally, I believe the last two years have been a disaster. The eight years before were also a disaster. And I think Tinubu’s administration has just come to build on that disaster.“I mean, people cannot eat. Just before I came down to meet you, somebody was phoning me, saying: ‘Mama, please send me some money, I have no food to eat.’ I get calls like that every day. And it is not that they just want money. It is true. You can even see them.“They are emaciated. People have lost weight because they are not eating properly.
“So, I do not believe that this is the kind of government that we actually need.”Bucknor-Akerele dismissed fighting with any politician in her partisan politicking,
She, thus, ruled out having reconciliation with anyone, explaining that her disagreement with then Governor Tinubu of Lagos State, in whose administration she was impeached as deputy governor, over over party control.
According to the former deputy governor, “Well, I was never fighting with anybody. I was just standing my ground because he wanted to take over the party that we formed. And we had even formed the party before he returned from his so-called exile.”
Bucknor-Akerele further expressed disquiet over the political stature of members of the current National Assembly, noting that they are not comparable with federal lawmakers of her time when she was in the senate.
The former deputy governor pointed out that federal lawmakers of her time were dedicated, made before becoming legislatures, adding that many were professionals.
She, however, expressed regret that contemporary federal lawmakers are career politicians and have no other means of livelihood.
Bucknor-Akerele, “I would say the calibre of people who are in the Senate now are not comparable to the calibre of people that were in the Senate when I was in the senate.
“We really had dedicated people. A lot of professionals also. People who were self-made before going into the senate.
“Now, a lot of them are career politicians. And that has made a difference because when I say career, these are people who make politics their career and have no other means of livelihood.”
