Govt insists on ban of commercial motorcycles in Lagos, cautions passengers, operators

Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its ban on commercial motorcycle operators, ‘okada’ riders in 10 Local G was disclosed in a statement by the overnment Areas, (LGAs) and 15 Local Council Development Areas, (LCDAs) in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, in a statement on Monday, after visiting some restricted areas, where large numbers of motorcyclists (okada riders) had resumed operations, insisted that the state government’s ban on okada in the affected areas remains unchanged.
Giwa noted the LGAs affected by the ban include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Eti-Osa. He maintained that the LCDAs include Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda, Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport cautioned that the both riders and passengers would be arrested if they don’t keep off the roads.
Giwa had declared: “any defaulter is liable to three years in prison if apprehended and prosecuted, with their motorcycles impounded and crushed in the public view, in line with the provision of Section 46, sub-section 1, 2 & 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.”
The Special Adviser decried that despite the interventions and viable alternatives provided by the state government for okada operators to cushion the effect of the ban on their livelihood, the recalcitrant riders have refused to take advantage of them.
