Some civil societies coalition, have condoled the family of Late Mohammed Fawehinmi, on his sudden death, saying the deceased would be immortalised.
The coalition included, Leaders of Conscience, under the auspices of National Consultative Front (NC Front) and Freshbreed Leaders, under the broad civil society platform, known as the Nigeria Intervention Movement (NIM).
The Spokesperson for the coalition, Mr Olawale Okunniyi, made this known in a statement in Lagos on Friday.
The National Daily recalls that Mohammed Fawehinmi died on Wednesday, during a brief illness in a Lagos hospital at the age of 52.
The late Mohammed had a law degree from the University of Buckingham, England, and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1998.
Okunniyi said the groups would immediately list the fiery activist in the Hall of Fame of June 12 Democracy Movement, as he would henceforth, be remembered annually on every democracy day in the country.
The spokesperson added that late Mohammed was one of the greatest heroes of the people, who struggled for the restoration of civil rule and democracy in the country.
”Mohammed Fawehinmi was part of the leaders of conscience, who initiated the NCFront budding rescue mission in 2019, at MKO Abiola’s residence, in company of Prof. Pat Utomi.
“Others are: Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Sen. Shehu Sanni, Mr Isa Arẹmu, Alhaji Yerima Shettimah and Prof. Anthony Kila, among others, during an event organised by the June 12 Democracy Movement to chart the way forward to save Nigeria.
“We also want to inform leaders of conscience, that in appreciation of Mohammed’s contributions to the struggle for popular democracy in Nigeria; haven earlier been part of the June 12 struggle against military autocracy, we shall immediately list the fiery activist in the Hall of Fame of June 12 democracy movement.
Okunniyi noted that Nigeria and the entire human race, had lost an indefatigable enigma of a great potential, who was a terror to oppressors of the masses.
He described Mohammed as an icon and selfless defender of people’s rights throughout his adult life, always challenging excesses of government and the ruling class.
The spokesperson, however, expressed huge shock and regret over the sudden exit of Mohammed Fawehinmi, lamenting that his demise came to them as a rude shock.
Okunniyi said this was because, they were still expecting more vibrant contributions from the political and judicial activist, as he was fondly called by associates and family members.
He added that the Nigerian civil society had lost an emerging giant in the current rescue mission of leaders of conscience and Freshbreed leaders, ahead of its planned 2023 intervention.
The spokesperson described Mohammed as indomitable, saying though physically challenged for most part of his adult life, he was never deterred nor debarred by his condition and therefore, surprisingly lived a resourceful and heroic life.
He concluded that the deceased also contributed immensely to the struggle for the wellbeing of masses in the shadow of his messianic father, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN).
