Gully erosion destroys over 30 houses in Edo community
A ravaging gully erosion has destroyed more than 30 houses in Agor-Uwagboe community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, cutting off access to neighbouring communities and prompting residents to seek urgent government intervention.
The erosion has also damaged the community’s access road linking it with Ofumwengbe and Egbiri communities, leaving residents with limited means of movement, according to community members.
Residents have constructed a makeshift wooden bridge to allow motorcycles to cross the affected area.
Speaking on the situation, a resident, Ernest Uwagboe, said the gully had continued to expand into the community, threatening more homes and property.
He warned that the community could face further destruction if urgent measures were not taken to address the erosion.
“About 30 houses have already been lost to the gully, which keeps expanding every year,” Uwagboe said, according to reports.
He expressed concern that more parts of the community could be affected if the erosion was not checked.
The community’s spokesman, Kenneth Adoni, said residents had written to several government agencies seeking assistance but had yet to receive intervention.
“We are begging Governor Monday Okpebholo to come and help us,” Adoni said. He added that the erosion had created difficulties for residents, particularly during rainfall, when movement within and outside the community becomes more difficult.
According to Adoni, the situation has also affected children travelling to school and residents seeking access to neighbouring communities.
The residents have appealed to the Edo State Government to intervene urgently to halt the expansion of the gully, protect homes and restore access to the affected communities.
The extent of future damage and the timeline for any government intervention remain unclear.
