Gunman arrest deepens Osun election tension as Speaker, APC candidate clash [VIDEO]

The political atmosphere in Osun State has come under renewed scrutiny following the arrest of a man allegedly armed with a firearm after Wednesday’s confrontation involving the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate, Francis Eniade.

The arrest has added a fresh security dimension to an already tense political environment in the state, coming only two days before the August 15 governorship election.

According to information surrounding the incident, the suspect was allegedly present during the confrontation while dressed in a police uniform. He was subsequently arrested without the uniform, with a firearm reportedly recovered from him.

The circumstances surrounding how the suspect obtained the weapon, why he was allegedly at the scene in police attire and the precise role he played in the confrontation are now expected to form part of the police investigation.

Suspect allegedly admits firing weapon

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly told investigators that he had been hired by Eniade and further claimed that he fired the weapon twice during the confrontation.

The allegation is yet to be independently verified, and it remains unclear whether investigators have obtained evidence capable of corroborating the suspect’s account.

Neither the alleged instruction to engage the suspect nor the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting have been independently established. The claims should therefore be treated as allegations pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The recovery of a firearm, however, has heightened concerns over the possible involvement of armed personnel or individuals posing as security operatives in the escalating political contest.

Police uniform raises further questions

One of the most significant elements of the incident is the reported use of a police uniform by the suspect.

If confirmed, the development could raise questions about whether the suspect was a serving security operative, a private individual wearing police clothing or someone who had unlawfully acquired the uniform.

Investigators are expected to establish the identity of the suspect, determine whether he has any connection with the police or other security agencies, and establish how he came to possess the firearm and police attire.

The circumstances could also determine whether additional offences, beyond those arising from the confrontation itself, may have been committed.

Election eve raises security concerns

The incident is particularly significant because it occurred only days before the August 15 governorship election, when political activities across Osun have entered a sensitive final stage.

The confrontation involving a senior state political office holder and an opposition candidate, followed by the arrest of an armed suspect, has raised concerns about the potential for political disagreements to escalate into violence.

Security agencies are expected to maintain heightened vigilance in the remaining hours before the election, particularly around campaign activities, polling locations and other politically sensitive areas.

The incident also places renewed focus on the conduct of political actors and their supporters as parties make their final efforts to mobilise voters ahead of Saturday’s poll.

For now, the central questions remain unanswered: who authorised the suspect’s presence, why was he allegedly dressed in police uniform, who supplied the firearm, and whether the weapon was actually discharged during the confrontation.

The answers to those questions will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Until then, the allegation that the suspect was hired by Eniade remains unproven, while the reported firearm recovery and the suspect’s alleged admission of firing two shots constitute matters that investigators must independently establish through forensic evidence, witness accounts and other available evidence.

With the governorship election only days away, the incident has nevertheless added another layer of concern to Osun’s already charged political environment.
