Spanish World Cup winner Juan Mata has confirmed he will not play another season for Melbourne Victory but will remain involved with the Australian club as part of its ownership group.

The 38-year-old midfielder joined Melbourne Victory for the 2025–26 A-League Men season and enjoyed an outstanding campaign, recording five goals and a competition-high 13 assists. He was also awarded the Johnny Warren Medal as the league’s best player.

Mata said he had enjoyed his time at the club and that the experience had renewed his love for football.

“I loved every minute and so greatly enjoyed everything that we achieved last season, falling back in love with football at such a special place, in an amazing city that it was a privilege to call home,” Mata said.

Although he will no longer play for Victory, Mata is set to remain closely connected to the club after taking an ownership stake. The arrangement was announced in June, with Mata expected to chair a newly established football committee as part of his post-playing role.

Melbourne Victory football director John Didulica praised Mata’s contribution during the 2025–26 campaign, describing his performances and conduct around the club as exemplary.

Mata, who was part of Spain’s 2010 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and enjoyed successful spells with clubs including Valencia, Chelsea and Manchester United, said he was excited about contributing to the future of Australian football from his new position.

“Now I am excited about our next chapters, believing together in the future of Australian football and inspiring the next generation of Melbourne Victory players and supporters,” he said.

While his departure from Melbourne Victory’s playing squad has been confirmed, reports indicate that Mata has not necessarily announced a complete retirement from professional football. His immediate decision is to step away from playing for Victory while considering the next stage of his career.
