Lagos police arraigned fake soldier in court, another charge for stealing

The long arm of the law has caught up with a middle-aged man impersonating the Nigerian Army, as police operatives attached to the Iju Division of the Lagos State Police Command arrested him. The suspect, identified as Timothy Abiola, aged 36, was subsequently charged to court for multiple offences, including assault and impersonation.

According to the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, Mr. Abiola was apprehended on November 18, 2024, at about 9:00 AM at Fagba Junction in the Ikeja Magisterial District. He was alleged to have assaulted one Abubakar Garuba by delivering a fist blow to his mouth, causing bodily harm. This act constitutes a violation of Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, which criminalizes assault and prescribes punishments for offenders.

The second charge read – On the same date, time, and location, the suspect was accused of impersonating a Nigerian Army personnel. He allegedly claimed to be a member of the Nigerian Army and was found in possession of a Legion camouflage cap and a purse, which were recovered from his residence during police investigations. This act of impersonation violates Section 380 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, which prohibits impersonation of public officers and carries severe penalties for offenders.

The suspect’s court hearing for these offences is slated for December 18, 2024, where he will face justice for his actions.

In a separate incident, another suspect, identified as Abah Abdullahi, aged 20, was arrested by the same division of the Lagos State Police Command. Mr. Abdullahi was caught in the act of attempting to break into a shop located at No. 10 Ajuwon Road, Elliot, Iju Ishaga, on November 20, 2024, at approximately 5:40 AM.

Police operatives on patrol in the area intercepted him as he tried to gain unauthorized entry into the shop. Tools believed to be used for the attempted burglary, including a pliers and a screwdriver, were recovered from the suspect at the scene. The prompt intervention of the police prevented further damage to the shop and safeguarded the property.

Mr. Abdullahi has also been charged to court for attempted burglary and related offences. His case is scheduled for hearing on December 24, 2024, which coincides with Christmas Eve, a period often marked by heightened vigilance against criminal activities.

Both suspects have been remanded in prison custody pending their court appearances. The swift action by the Lagos State Police Command underscores their commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of residents.
