Lawan takes oath of office as Senate President of Ninth NASS

The new President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has taken the oath of office in Abuja after defeating Senator Ali Ndume in the election of the presiding officer on the inauguration of the ninth national Assembly on Tuesday. The oath of office and oath of allegiance were admitted by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, who supervised the election of the senate president by the 107 senators present.

Lawan succeeds Dr. Bukola Saraki, who lost re-election to the senate in the 2019 general elections.

Lawan secured 79 votes to defeat Senator Ali Ndume who got 28 votes to emerge senate president of the Ninth National Assembly.

Senate President Lawan is the eight presiding officer of the Senate since 1999. Former Presidents of the Senate include: Senator Evans Enwerem, Senator Chuba Okadigbo, Senator Adolhpus Wabara, Senator Ken Nnamani, Senator Pius Ayim, Senator David Mark and Senator Bukola Saraki.

However, the Clerk of the National Assembly has called for nominations for the deputy senate president.
