NCC reaffirms partnership with stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s telecom industry

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s telecommunications industry remains resilient, sustainable and attractive to investors.

Maida made the pledge while receiving a delegation from the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), led by its President, Dr Ike Neliaku, at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

According to the NCC boss, the Commission will continue to work closely with professional bodies such as the NIPR to enhance public awareness, promote responsible communication and deepen stakeholder engagement on issues affecting Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

He congratulated the NIPR on securing the hosting rights for the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, describing the achievement as a testament to strategic communication, perseverance and Nigeria’s growing ability to effectively project its strengths on the global stage.

“The circumstances surrounding the successful bid offer valuable lessons. It tells a compelling story of perseverance, strategic communication and the importance of owning the narrative. It also reflects our ability to convincingly demonstrate why Nigeria deserves the opportunity to host the forum,” Maida said.

The NCC chief also urged the institute to leverage the forthcoming African Telecoms Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries, scheduled to be hosted in Nigeria in July 2026, as another platform to showcase the country’s achievements and strengthen its international reputation.

Highlighting ongoing regulatory efforts, Maida said the Commission has intensified public education, sensitisation and awareness campaigns aimed at improving accountability and ensuring long-term stability within the telecom sector.

He listed several initiatives currently being implemented by the Commission, including awareness campaigns on the protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), advocacy for efficient data usage, directives to mobile network operators on simplified tariff information, the development of public network coverage maps and policies designed to promote fair competition across the industry.

The NCC boss noted that recent reforms and regulatory decisions, though difficult, have started yielding positive results, particularly in restoring investor confidence.

“Through the efforts that we have been making to stabilise the sector, we have been able to restore investor confidence. The level of investment we are seeing now is no longer about keeping the lights on; it is about growing the industry. This is something we have not witnessed for years, and it demonstrates that investors have confidence in the sector, the government’s reforms, the regulator and the opportunities available in this market,” he said.

Responding, NIPR President Dr Neliaku commended the NCC for its commitment to collaboration and effective stakeholder engagement, describing the Commission as a key driver of Nigeria’s digital economy.

He reaffirmed the institute’s readiness to partner with the NCC on initiatives that promote responsible communication, reputation management and increased public awareness of the Commission’s regulatory programmes
