Notorious bandit reportedly flaunts alleged kidnap ransom cash on TikTok

A suspected notorious bandit, identified as Auta Yankuzo, has reportedly shared a photograph on TikTok displaying a large sum of cash allegedly obtained from kidnap ransom payments, sparking renewed concerns over the use of social media by criminal groups.

The allegation was made on Wednesday by conflict journalist Bakatsine in a post on X, where he claimed the image was uploaded to Yankuzo’s TikTok account on Tuesday.

According to Bakatsine, the photograph appeared to show proceeds from a ransom payment, although he noted that it may not have been taken recently.

“Bandits TikToker Auta Yankuzo has posted a ransom payment on his account yesterday. The picture appears to be from previous payment as the ground looks too dry to be of recent days,” he wrote

The journalist, who is known for reporting on insecurity and armed banditry in Nigeria’s North-West, suggested that while the image was recently shared online, it likely depicted an earlier ransom transaction.

The reported post has heightened concerns over the growing online presence of armed bandit groups, some of whom have increasingly used social media platforms to display weapons, cash and other items believed to be linked to their criminal activities.

The latest development follows the circulation of a viral video in which armed bandits were seen flaunting large sums of money allegedly received from ransom payments, raising fresh alarm over the country’s worsening security situation.

Kidnapping for ransom remains one of Nigeria’s most persistent security threats, particularly across the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where armed groups frequently target communities, motorists, students and farmers.

Despite ongoing military operations and security offensives against criminal gangs, incidents of abduction and bandit attacks continue to be reported in several states, underscoring the challenge of curbing the activities of the armed groups.
