Over 250,000 displaced as wildfires rage across Southwest France,  Spain

A rapidly spreading wildfire in southwest France has triggered fresh mass evacuations, forcing another 55,000 residents to flee their homes as firefighters battle to contain flames advancing toward the city of Bordeaux.

The latest evacuation orders, issued overnight on Sunday by authorities in the Gironde region, bring the number of people displaced in the area to about 220,000, underscoring the scale of one of France’s most severe wildfire emergencies in recent years.

Officials directed residents in five additional localities southwest of Bordeaux to leave immediately after strong overnight winds intensified the blaze, allowing it to spread rapidly across dry vegetation.

According to regional authorities, the wildfire has been burning uncontrollably since the middle of last week, with weather conditions continuing to hamper firefighting operations.

The Gironde Prefecture also announced the partial closure of a major highway leading southwest from Bordeaux to facilitate emergency operations and ensure public safety.

Bordeaux Mayor said the fire remains “at the gates of the metropolitan area,” warning that at its nearest point, the flames had advanced to within approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) of the historic city.

Emergency services have continued deploying firefighters, aircraft and other resources in an effort to slow the fire’s advance and protect populated communities.

Meanwhile, a second major wildfire burning further south in the Landes region has displaced an additional 30,000 people over the past week.

Combined, the two fires have forced more than 250,000 residents across southwest France to evacuate their homes, making the crisis one of the country’s largest wildfire-related displacement events in recent memory.

The fires have also disrupted transportation, threatened homes and businesses, and placed increasing pressure on emergency responders working around the clock to contain multiple fire fronts.

In neighbouring Spain, authorities have evacuated approximately 70,000 people this week as separate wildfires swept through areas west of Madrid, highlighting the growing wildfire threat across southern Europe amid hot, dry and windy conditions.

Officials in both countries continue to monitor weather forecasts closely, warning that strong winds and prolonged dry conditions could further complicate containment efforts in the coming days.
