Sowunmi labels APC ‘gang of zombies,’ experts weigh in on political rhetoric
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sparked controversy by describing the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “gang of zombies” during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
Sowunmi argued that the APC operates more like a “special purpose vehicle for elections” rather than a true political party, pointing to the absence of recent internal party congresses as evidence of its lack of democratic processes.
“The PDP just conducted congresses across the country. I can’t remember the last time APC did anything like that,” Sowunmi said, accusing the ruling party of operating under a “lane of deception.”
Political analyst Dr. Adewale Ogundipe weighed in on the criticism, stating, “Sowunmi’s remarks reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the ruling party’s internal operations.

However, the use of inflammatory rhetoric can deepen polarization and distract from policy debates.”
Dr. Ngozi Okechukwu, an expert in political communications, added, “The real question is whether such accusations hold water in the eyes of voters. Criticizing internal party democracy is valid, but resorting to name-calling like ‘zombies’ risks undermining the credibility of the opposition.”
Sowunmi’s comments come as both parties gear up for future elections, with the PDP stressing its adherence to democratic principles, while the APC faces internal leadership challenges.
Experts note that while such heated exchanges are part of Nigeria’s political landscape, they could also signal deeper concerns about party unity and governance ahead of the next election cycle.
