Tinubu hosts Team Nigeria ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially bid farewell to Team Nigeria on Thursday ahead of the country’s departure for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The send-off ceremony will take place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President is expected to charge the athletes and officials to represent Nigeria with pride and uphold the country’s sporting reputation.
According to the National Sports Commission, Team Nigeria has been training in Abuja and will depart for Aberdeen, Scotland, on Friday for a three-week training camp before moving to Glasgow for the Games.

Nigeria will be aiming to improve on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where it finished as Africa’s best-performing nation with 35 medals comprising 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
A total of 74 Nigerian athletes will compete in 10 sports at the Games, scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 2.
The NSC stated the presidential farewell underscores the Federal Government’s support for Team Nigeria as it prepares to compete for medals in Glasgow.
