2023 Women World Cup: How the Super Falcons booked last 16 ticket despite draw against Rep of Ireland
The Super Falcons had on Monday progressed to the round of last 16 despite playing out a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland in the ongoing Women World Cup.
The Nigeria ladies though finished second behind co-hosts Australia who thumped Canada 4-0 to go top of Group B, will now await the results from group D to figure out their opponents in the round of 16.
The Randy Waldrum’s side had started the game in defensive shape against Ireland, already out at the group stage.
The ladies had their best chance of the first half came the way of forward Asisat Oshoala, who shot wide from a ball by Uchenna Kanu.
And with the Super Falcons struggling to build out from the back, the Girls in Green of Ireland had however, struggled to create much chances despite dominating possession.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria women came much alive in the second half as they were able to string together decent chances.
Toni Payne was able to locate Kanu whose header was saved by the Irish goalkeeper.
Shortly, Oshoala was also through on goal but dragged her shot wide for the second time in the game.
It became a back-and-forth encounter in the second half, with more urgency from the Super Falcons.
In the 67th minute, Super Falcons Head Coach Waldrum made the changes, introducing Monday Gift and Ifeoma Onumonu.
The game became stagnant for a while as both teams created little in the closing stages.
In the end, the Super Falcons were able to hold off Ireland late in the game, settling for a draw.
The fans of the Nigeria side can only hope for the best for their women as the knock stage beckons.
