4 Things about Kirikiri Prison you might not know about
There are several prisons in the world, and every prison has the kind of inmates that are kept in them. Some prisons are meant for ordinary prisoners who committed minor offenses, while some prisons were built for hardened criminals whose offenses are high. Kirikiri prison in Lagos state is one of the most popular prisons in Nigeria.
There are some things about the Kirikiri prison in Lagos which you might have not heard about before now. I have already told you that the prison is located in Lagos State. Some of the things you don’t know about this prison are:
1. Kirikiri prison was built by our colonial masters (The British). The prison was built when the British government was still ruling Nigeria. The prison was built in 1955, this was before the independence of Nigeria.
2. Kirikiri prison is meant for hardened criminals, the prison is not soft. If you hear someone was sentenced to Kirikiri prison, that means the gravity of his offense is very high. It is not meant for minor prisoners, not at all.
3. Popular Nigerians were once sentenced to Kirikiri prison. This prison has accommodated many popular Nigerians, both the dead ones and those who are still alive. The popular Nigerians who have been to Kirikiri prison include Former presidents of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo and Yaradua, Fela Kuti, Bode George, and others.
4. When Kirikiri prison was newly built, many Nigerian prisoners were sent from overseas to stay in Kirikiri. These were Nigerians who were detained overseas in their prison, so after hearing that a large prison has been built in Nigeria. Many Nigerian prisoners were transported back to their country to stay in their country prison.
Kirikiri prison is undoubtedly the most popular prison in Nigeria, I think it’s also the first prison in Nigeria. And don’t forget that prison is not a good place to be. Avoid anything that will land you in prison.
